Introduction to New Zealand Healthcare System: 2 weeks of online learning + 6 weeks of hands-on clinical placement in a New Zealand aged care facility.

Passing the OSCE is a huge achievement, but many nurses tell us the same thing: “I’ve never actually worked in a New Zealand facility.”
This programme closes that gap.
A structured, 8-week introduction to how New Zealand healthcare really works, in two parts:
| Part 1: Online learning | Part 2: Clinical placement | |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 2 weeks | 6 weeks |
| Where | Online, from anywhere in the world | An aged care facility in Auckland or Waikato |
| How | Self-paced learning | Voluntary (unpaid) placement, alongside healthcare assistants (HCAs) and registered nurses (RNs) |
| Before you move on | Must be fully completed, and we check this before your placement starts | Portfolio completed and signed off by your preceptor |
This programme is for internationally qualified nurses who:
It is especially valuable if you are finding it hard to get your first New Zealand nursing job, or if you have never seen a New Zealand clinical or aged care facility.

An 8-week programme for internationally qualified nurses: 2 weeks of self-paced online learning, followed by a 6-week voluntary clinical placement in a New Zealand aged care facility.
Most nurses arrive for the OSCE without ever having seen a NZ hospital, clinical facility or aged care home. This programme shows you how the NZ system actually works: how nurses run an aged care home, how RNs delegate, and what HCAs do. You’ll be ready for interviews and for your first job.
Enrolment and the online learning are managed by New Zealand Skills Connect (NZSC). Clinical placements are hosted through our placement partner, Talent Grid.
No. The placement is voluntary and unpaid. It is a learning experience that gives you NZ exposure, references and confidence. Some employers do offer roles to placement nurses they would like to keep, but this isn’t guaranteed.
Yes. While on placement, you can list it on your CV as your current placement at that facility.
Nurses who already hold an APC (ideal) and nurses who have passed the OSCE and are waiting for their APC (also welcome).
Not yet. You can register your interest now, and we’ll contact you about a future cohort once you’ve passed.

Yes. We check that it is complete before your placement starts.
You’ll work shifts with HCAs and RNs, as arranged with the facility. Plan to be available for the full 6 weeks.
For roughly the first 2 weeks you work alongside HCAs, then alongside RNs for the remaining 4 weeks. You complete a portfolio, which your preceptor checks and signs off, and a clinical tutor catches up with you weekly.
Yes. You need a valid visa for the whole programme, until your placement finishes.
We can help you apply for an extension or a new visa through our licensed immigration adviser.
Possibly. Some nurses travel on the same visa. However, there is a small risk that border officers may not allow entry, because that visa was granted for occupational registration, not for a course or placement. We’ll talk you through this risk before you decide.
We can apply for a Student and Internship Visitor Visa, supported by an offer letter from the training provider and a letter from the clinical placement provider. The visa fee is approximately NZ$1,500 and the immigration adviser fee is NZ$500 (subject to change). Apply early, because you need everything organised within 2 weeks of securing your seat.
No. Visa decisions are made by Immigration New Zealand. Our licensed adviser will give you the best advice for your situation.
